Potomac Sweeps Kinston

Kinston - Matt Whitney continued his hot play with another home run, but it wasn’t enough as Potomac beat Kinston 6-3 Wednesday night at Grainger Stadium. The Potomac win completed a three game sweep of the K-Tribe, just the second time Kinston has been swept this season.

Potomac ran out to a 3-0 lead off of K-Tribe starter Steven Wright, but Kinston came back with runs in the second and third. Jerad Head drove in Chris Gimenez with a sacrifice fly in the second to cut Potomac’s lead to 3-1. In the third inning, Whitney’s home run evened the score at three. Whitney now has a combined 30 home runs on the season, hitting his 14th with Kinston tonight; while bombing 16 for Low A Lake County in the first half of the season. Potomac would come right back with a two-run homer of their own, as Justin Maxwell hit the game winning shot in the top of the fourth. Kinston managed just three hits in the final six innings of the game.

Chris Niesel (3-1) took the loss, giving up three hits and three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. Wright pitched the first three innings of the game, giving up six hits and two earned runs. Matt Meyer, T.J. Burton and Scott Roehl combined for 3 2/3 innings of scoreless work for the bullpen. Craig Stammen (8-6) took the win for Potomac, giving up one hit in 3 2/3 innings of work. Former East Carolina standout Greg Bunn pitched an inning of scoreless relief for Potomac, picking up his second hold of the season.

Kinston is still in first place in the Carolina League Southern Division’s second half, holding a three and a half game lead over second place Salem. The K-Tribe has a scheduled off day on Thursday, but returns to Grainger Stadium on Friday for their final regular season home stand of 2007. Josh Tomlin (0-0, 3.00) will get the start for Kinston, game time is 7pm on Friday with fireworks after the game.
