K-Tribe Sweeps Carolina League Weekly Awards

Kinston first baseman Matt Whitney and starting pitcher Frank Herrmann combined to sweep the Carolina League weekly awards.

Whitney is the Carolina League Player of the Week, after hitting .417 (10-24) with four home runs, seven RBI and nine runs scored. Whitney also had a slugging percentage of 1.042 for the week ending Sunday. Whitney started the season at Low A Lake County, hitting .308 with 16 home runs and 64 RBI in 72 games. Since joining the K-Tribe, Whitney has hit .297 with 13 home runs and 39 RBI in just 44 games. With his combined stats Whitney has the most home runs (29) and RBI (103) in all of A ball; Whitney has the fourth most RBI and 10th most home runs in all of Minor League Baseball.

Herrmann is the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 in two starts. Herrmann pitched a combined 15 innings, giving up just one earned run while striking out ten. Herrmann’s first start of the week was a seven inning complete game; he now leads the Carolina League with three complete games this season. Herrmann in 10-5 with a 4.10 ERA and has won his last three starts. Herrmann racked up his 10th win of the season on Sunday, making him the fourth K-Tribe pitcher this season to get to double digit victories. Ryan Edell (11-6, 3.48), Kevin Dixon (10-4, 3.69) and Jim Deters (10-3, 2.00) are the three other players with ten wins this season, the first time since 1988 that Kinston has had four ten game winners in a year.

Herrmann and Whitney become the fourth and fifth K-Tribers to take weekly awards this season. Josh Rodriguez was the Carolina League Player of the Week last week,

Chris Gimenez took Player of the Week honors in May and David Huff took Pitcher of the Week honors for the last week in April.

The K-Tribe has the second best record in all of Minor League Baseball with a 79-46 overall record. In the second half of the season, Kinston is in first place in the Carolina League Southern Division with a 34-22 mark; leading second place Salem by five games with 14 games to go.
