Kinston Finishes Off Myrtle Beach 6-4

Myrtle Beach - Both Josh Rodriguez and Matt Whitney hit home runs again as Kinston beat Myrtle Beach 6-4 on Thursday night in South Carolina. Whitney hit a three-run, home run in the top of the first inning after Jose Constanza and Rodriguez led off the game with back to back walks. Whitney has now hit a home run in his last three games; the bomb was his ninth of the season. Rodriguez followed suit with a solo shot to lead off the top of the third inning. Rodriguez has now hit a home run in four straight games, hitting a homer in every game of the series with Myrtle Beach. Rodriguez is now tied for the team lead in home runs with 16 and has had at least one RBI in his last seven games. After J-Rod’s home run, Whitney singled and Chris Gimenez hit a double. Wes Hodges and John Drennen brought them home with back to back sacrifice flies. Kinston took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the third and did not look back.

K-Tribe starter Jim Deters (9-3) picked up his ninth win of the season, going five innings and giving up just three hits. Deters gave up two unearned runs, lowering his season ERA to 2.01. Matt Meyer came in for two innings of hitless relief, walking one and striking out two. After reliever Neil Wagner pitched into the ninth, Scott Roehl came in for his Carolina League leading 20th save of the season. Tommy Hanson (2-2) was stuck with the loss for Myrtle Beach.

Kinston ends up taking three of four from the Pelicans and now heads to Lynchburg, Virginia for a three game series with the Hillcats. Erik Stiller will take the mound for Kinston on Friday at 7pm.
