HOUSTON -- The San Diego Padres released utilityman Russell Branyan on Saturday to open a roster spot for outfielder Scott Hairston, acquired Friday from Arizona.
The 31-year-old Branyan batted .197 with a home run and 19 RBI in 67 games for the Padres this season. He started 30 games -- 18 at third base, nine in left field and three as a designated hitter.
Branyan was a fan favorite at Grainger Stadium while with the Kinston Indians in 1997. He led the Carolina League in homers with 27 before being called up to Double A.
The Padres got Hairston from the Diamondbacks for minor league right-hander Leo Rosales. In 76 games with the Diamondbacks, Hairston hit .222 with three home runs and 16 RBI.
