MALIBU, Calif. - Robert Dickmann tossed the first complete game of his career and Nate Johnson hit a pair of home runs as Pepperdine (6-8) handed No. 10 East Carolina (7-6) their third loss in a row on their current California road trip Friday afternoon 10-3 at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Dickmann (3-1) threw eight shutout innings until the Pirates finally pushed across three runs on three hits in the top of the ninth inning. The fifth-year senior finished with five strikeouts, no walks and allowed seven hits on the day.
Zach Woods (2-1) dropped his first game of the season lasting 1.2 innings where he was touched for five runs (four earned) on five hits with a walk. Patrick Somers also allowed five runs (all earned) on four hits in 1.2 innings of relief work with two strikeouts. Freshman Joseph Hughes made his collegiate debut in the fourth frame scattering two hits in 3.2 shutout innings, while Mike Anderson worked a scoreless eighth inning,
Pepperdine wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Johnson ripped the first of his two homers with a towering two-run shot to right field plating Joe Sever in front of him. Sever was hit by a Woods pitch after Harrison Kain reached on a fielding error by Dustin Harrington with one out.
The Waves added three runs in the second on four hits and another ECU error to up its lead to 5-0. Ryan Van Amburg doubled to right field to start the frame and then took third on Ryan Heroy’s infield single that was a hard grounder to first baseman John Wooten. Van Amburg scored the first run on a Woods wild pitch that also moved Heroy to second base. Torrey Jacoby followed with a sac bunt just in front ECU catcher Jared Avchen, who threw the ball wide to first, scoring Heroy and putting Jacoby on third with no outs. Miles Silverstein stepped up to the plate and lined a shot through the left side scoring Jacoby for the final run of the inning.
In the fourth inning, the Waves put the game out of reach for good scoring five runs to make the score 10-0. Jacoby punched a shot through the left side and Silverstein walked to put runners at first and second with no outs. After Somers fanned Brian Humphries, Kain singled down the left field line scoring Jacoby and Sever cleared the bases with a two-RBI double down the left field line. Johnson capped the five-run inning with another two-run homer to right field before ECU’s Hughes came in to record the final two outs.
The Pirates, who had just four hits through the first eight innings, strung together three consecutive hits in the ninth and scored three runs to end the game at 10-3. Cam Freeman led off with an infield single to third and Harrington followed with a blooper to right to extend his hit steak to 21 games. Kyle Roller picked up his second hit of the contest with a double to left center that cleared the bases. Roller advanced to third on Corey Thompson’s ground out and crossed home on the Pirates’ next at-bat when Wooten grounded out to first.
ECU and Pepperdine will play the final game of the three-game non-conference series Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. (EST) first pitch scheduled.

Hi Dave. 1-3 in Cali., w/ the next 13 games at home= Pirates will be just fine. By the way, speaking of Cali., what's up w/ post graduation plans? Dave, the Cali. Dodger...
I wonder why folks on this page, who presumably live in eastern NC, love to bash ECU? I can see why the folks in Raleigh and Chapel Hill do but if you're living in eastern NC, you're nothing too special. So, why to you bash the home team? How does ECU's success threaten you? Just curious. Can one of you explain? Thanks!
YOO HOO? ECU baseball fans, WHERE ARE YOU?? HA HA HA.
