Drag Racing Legend Don Garlits Headed To Eastern North Carolina

Drag racing legend, “Big Daddy”, Don Garlits, with his “Swamp Rat” rail dragster is coming here this weekend to the Outer Banks Speedway. Even if you are not a racing enthusiast, you truly should come out to meet the man who is considered to be the Godfather of drag racing. He will be at the track all day Saturday to sign autographs and make passes in his legendary Swamp Rat dragster.

Don Garlits was the first drag racer to officially surpass 170, 180, 200, 240, 250, 260, and 270 miles per hour; and he was also the first to top 200 mph in the 1/8 mile. On October 20, 1987, his home-built Top Fuel dragster, “Swamp Rat XXX”, was enshrined in The Smithsonian Institution museum in Washington, D.C., which also houses The Spirit of St. Louis and NASA's first manned space capsule.

The Outer Banks Speedway, in Creswell, will be holding an Outlaw Open Quick 8 Race, Teen Race and Bracket Race. The current track record of 3.89 will more than likely be broken Saturday evening. Gates open at 1 pm with time runs at 5 pm and racing shortly thereafter.
