Kinston Tops Winston-Salem on the Road

Salem - Kinston ends June in style with a 5-2 comeback win against Winston-Salem on Saturday night. Kinston trailed 2-0 in the fifth inning when Josh Rodriguez delivered a two-run home run to even the score. It was the seventh home run of the year for Rodriguez, but his first since June 1st. The score would stay tied until the seventh inning when Matt Whitney delivered a two-out, RBI single scoring Nate Panther. Panther reached base earlier in the inning on a costly error by Winston-Salem right fielder David Cook, on a fly ball to shallow center that bounced off Cook’s glove. Mike Butia and Jerad Head would finish up the inning with RBI hits of their own to give Kinston the 5-2 advantage. The K-Tribe finished the month of June with a 19-6 record and a team batting average over .300 for the month.

Frank Herrmann (6-2) picked up the win, giving up just one earned run through six innings. Mike Finocchi pitched well from the bullpen, throwing two innings of one-hit ball. Scott Roehl pitched a perfect ninth inning for his team leading eleventh save of the season. Kinston pitchers did not walk a batter during the game. Israel Chirino (0-2) took the loss for the Warthogs, giving up three unearned runs. Former East Carolina University pitcher Ricky Brooks pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning for the Warthogs. The former pirate was recently called up from low A Kannapolis.

Kinston plays game two of the series Sunday afternoon at 5pm. The K-Tribe’s Ryan Edell takes the mound for Kinston.
