Wilson - In the first ever draft for the Harlem Globetrotters, they have selected Anthony Atkinson, senior point guard of the Barton College Bulldogs, 2007 NCAA D-II National Men's Basketball Championship Team as one of five players for a publicity draft. This means that Anthony will be invited to a two-week tryout in October where the organization will decide on who they will offer contracts to for their upcoming season.
Bulldog fans across the country have been online all week voting for Barton College in the “Best Finish” category of the 2007 ESPY awards. Electronic voting opened to the public yesterday on the ESPN web site: www.espys.tv.
The Barton College basketball team’s run to the National D-II Championship and All-American point guard Anthony Atkinson will be center stage on a national stage once again for the ESPY Awards, scheduled to air on Wednesday, July 15, at 9 p.m.
The awards program, to be held earlier on July 11 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, Calif., will highlight the greatest worldwide athletic accomplishments of the past year.
Barton will be represented by head basketball coach Ron Lievense and his wife, Darla, along with Atkinson and his parents, Anthony and Vivian.
Atkinson scored Barton’s final 10 points of the 2007 National Championship game as the Bulldogs rallied from seven points in the final 39 seconds to defeat undefeated, top-ranked Winona State 77-75. The Warriors, who had beaten Barton in the 2006 Elite Eight in overtime, were also riding the longest winning streak in D-II history: 57 games.
