The K-Tribe scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to come back and beat Wilmington 9-8 Monday night. Kinston was down to their final struje as Stephen Head a hit a two-out, full count pitch to right field. As Chris De La Cruz scored the tying run, Wilmington’s right fielder Brian McFall misplayed the ball and allowed pinch runner Jerad Head to score from first. Stephen Head received an RBI for De La Cruz and McFall was charged with an error for the second run. Kinston started the rally on back to back singles from De La Cruz and Michael Aubrey. Aubrey went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Gilbert De La Vara picked up the loss for Wilmington. Matt Meyer picked up the win for Kinston. Scott Roehl pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 8th save of the season.
The back and fourth contest started with Wilmington taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Kinston came back in the fourth inning, with a two RBI single from Jared Goedert and a two-run home run by Nathan Panther. Wilmington took a 6-4 lead with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kinston would take a 7-6 lead a half inning later, when Josh Rodriguez hit a two RBI double scoring Goedert and Panther. The K-Tribe would then watch their lead disappear again when Wilmington’s Kila Kaaihue hit a solo home run in the seventh and Jose Duarte lined an RBI single with two away in the top of the eighth. Kinston was down 8-7 as the stage was set for their ninth inning comeback. It was just the second time Kinston has come back to win a game when trailing after eight innings.
Kinston returns to Wilmington on Tuesday for a double header starting at 5:35pm. Frank Herrmann will take the mound for game one.
