Beirshenk Wins Touchstone Energy Open

Greenville, NC (May 27, 2007)…With a tap in putt for par on the first playoff hole, Tommy Biershenk (Boiling Springs, SC) captured The Touchstone Energy Open over the 6821 yard, par 72 Brook Valley Country Club for his fifth career Hooters Tour title.

“I’m going on thirty-four years old and I am not sure how old those other guys (Flores and Wright) but nerves do come into play,” said Biershenk. “You need to learn how to funnel those nerves into something else; I have learned how to do so with my wins out here.”

The former Clemson Tiger golfer fired rounds of 72-65-69-68 for a four day total of fourteen-under par 274 and a playoff victory over Martin Flores (Mansfield, TX). Flores closed with a two-under par 70 on Sunday but an errant tee shot cost him advancing past the first playoff hole.

“I was really happy for Flores when I heard that he eagled 17 to give himself a chance after what had happened in Pittsburgh,” said Biershenk. “I really like playing with him and he is a nice guy, he will ultimately get it done out here.”

Aaron Wright, a Naval Academy graduate that joined the Marine Corps after college instead of turning pro, finished the tournament with a one-under par 71 Sunday for a four day total of thirteen-under par 275 and sole possession of third place.

John Scott Rattan (Montgomery Village, MD), who set the course record with a nine-under par 63 on Friday, finished all alone in fourth place at twelve-under par 276 after a closing round five-under par 67.

Former Furman Paladin Matt Davidson (Chapel Hill) headed up the North Carolina contingent in The Touchstone Energy Open carding a four day total of five-under par 283, while former Tar Heel Ramon Bescansa (Santiago, Spain) closed out the week at three-over par 291.

Biershenk collects $33,566 for his second win in three weeks on the Hooters Tour, while Flores takes home $16,751 for his second runner up finish of the season.

The Hooters Tour takes a week off before swinging back into action in Bentonville, Arkansas June 4-10 for the NGA Bentonville Open.
