Ben McClung (Jacksonville, FL) and Matthew Borchert (Orlando, FL) opened with five-under par 67’s in Thursday’s first round of The Touchstone Energy Open over the 6821 yard, par 72 Brook Valley Country Club to take the clubhouse lead.
The pair of Floridians hold a slim one stroke lead over a group of golfers that opened with four-under par 68’s. The group includes UNC grad Kevin Silva (New Bedford, MA), Jeremy Wilkinson (San Antonio, TX), Australian Andrew Tschudin, Argentinean Jose Buezas and Irishmen Chris Devlin.
Chapel Hill’s Matt Davidson heads up a group of eight golfers that are two strokes behind the leaders heading into Round two after carding a three-under par 69 Thursday.
Brook Valley Assistant pro Bennett Dunn heads up the remainder of the North Carolina contingent in The Touchstone Energy Open after opening with an even par 72 Thursday. Wake Forest assistant coach Chris Yoder (Winston-Salem) carded a two-over par 74, while Greenville’s John LaMonica failed to make it past Thursday after firing an 87 on Thursday.
Round Two will begin at 7:30 Friday morning. The cut will be made Friday evening with the low 60 professionals and ties making the cut.
The total purse for The Touchstone Energy Open is $200,000 with $33,566 going to the winner.
