The Kinston Indians belted back to back to back home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind and beat Potomac 8-7 on Sunday afternoon. With the K-Tribe down 7-5, Chris Gimenez started the inning with a home run off Potomac reliever Josh Perrault. Nathan Panther followed with his fourth home run of the year and Chris De La Cruz finished up the feat with a homer one batter latter. It was just the seventh career home run in 19-hundred at bats for De La Cruz. It was the first time Kinston hit back to back to back home runs since April 28th, 2005. Brad Snyder, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Ryan Mulhern was the trio that hit the home runs in 2005.
The contest was a continuation of a suspended game from Saturday night. Kinston led 3-1 when they picked it back up in the bottom of the fourth on Sunday. Kinston scored two runs on RBI’s by John Drennen and Stephen Head, to take a 5-3 led in the bottom of the seventh. Potomac would come back with four runs in the top of the eighth to take a commanding 7-5 lead before the trio of homers later in the inning. T.J. Burton picked up his Carolina League leading fifth win, coming out of the bullpen in the eighth inning. Scott Roehl picked up his sixth save of the season pitching a perfect ninth inning. With the win Kinston assured their sixth series win of the season.
In the final game of the series played later in the afternoon, Potomac beat Kinston 3-1. K-Triber Stephen Head hit a solo home run, his fourth of the year and second of the series, in the sixth inning. Kinston’s Chao Kuan Wu went 2-for-2. K-Tribe starter Sung-Wei Tseng (0-4) was the tough luck loser, giving up just two hits in five and one-third innings. An error and a wild pitch led to the two unearned runs he surrendered. All three of the Potomac runs scored were unearned. Shairon Martis (3-3) picked up the win for Potomac.
Kinston continues there home stand tomorrow at Grainger Stadium against Frederick. The battle between the Carolina League’s Northern and Southern Division leaders starts at 7pm tomorrow. Frank Herrmann (2-0, 3.13) takes the mound for the K-Tribe.
