East Carolina got hits from 12 different batters as the Pirates pounced on the Savannah State Tigers 14-1 Friday night in non-conference action at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Pirates (26-12), who extended their winning streak to five games, used home runs from Kyle Roller, Ryan Tousley and Jake Dean.
Jeff Ostrander picked up his second win of the season after working four scoreless innings of relief allowing one hit and one walk. Starter Mike Anderson, who was on a pitch count, worked three innings, giving up one run on two hits. Senior Cody Leggett and freshman Joe O’Malley each tossed one scoreless inning coming out of the pen.
Patrick Ballew dropped to 7-5 on the season for the Tigers (26-18) after allowing 11 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits in seven innings. Marcus Phillips did fare much better coming in relief as he gave up three runs on four hits and did not record an out. John Keen worked a scoreless eighth inning.
ECU drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning when Tousley singled up the middle scoring Stephen Batts for a 1-0 lead. Batts reached base on a single to left field and then advanced to second on a fielding error by left fielder Antonio Richmond.
In the second inning the Pirates added to their lead pushing the score to 4-0 due to a pair of Tiger errors. Roller led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on Corey Kemp’s single through the left side then scored when Drew Schieber reached on a sac bunt error by Timothy Waine. Jamie Ray moved Schieber and Kemp into scoring position with a ground out to second. Harrison Eldridge drove in Schieber with an infield bunt single.
The Tigers plated their first run in the third inning when Waine scored on a Anderson passed ball cutting into the lead 4-1. Waine walked to start the frame, moved to second on Ryan Sainz single through the right side then advanced to third on Richmond’s sac bunt.
Roller extended the Pirates lead to 6-1 in the bottom third with a two-run shot to center field, his third of the year and third in the last three games, scoring Ryan Wood ahead of him.
Tousley hit his team-leading ninth home run in the bottom of the fourth putting the score at 7-1.
The Pirates scored four runs in the seventh inning making the score 11-1. Mollenhauer doubled up the middle to start the game, then moved to third on Batts single to left and tagged up on Tousley’s sac fly. Kemp drove in his 25th run of the season on a single up the middle that plated Batts. Schieber capped the scoring in the frame with a two-run double to left center.
Jake Dean smacked his first home run of the season and first in 112 at-bats with his pinch-hit two-run shot off Phillips in the eighth inning making the score 13-1. ECU would add another run in the frame on Kemp’s sac fly that scored Brandon Henderson closing the game at 14-1.
The Pirates and Tigers will be back in action Saturday night with a first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. (EDT).
