GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Pirates won 5-1 in back-to-back games against the Akron Zips at the ECU Softball Field. A five-run sixth inning in game one, followed by a two-run fourth inning in game two gave East Carolina the sweep.
A rally started for ECU (22-8) in game one when Christina Merrida pinch-hit for Cristen Aona and led off with a walk. After being sacrificed over to second base, Merrida would score the Pirates first run when Charina Sumner reached base on a two-base error by the third baseman. Beth Nolan singled to center field three batters later and got credited with an RBI when she scored Jessica Johnson who had earlier singled. Merrida would come up to bat again in the inning with two outs and delivered a single to left field, scoring Stacey Andrews.
After being down a run in the third inning in game two, ECU battled back in the fourth inning with two runs of their own. Nolan led off the inning with her third home run of the season. Kaui Tom followed Nolan's at-bat with a double to left field and would later score the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Joyce Roodenburg.
The Pirates would add three more runs in the fifth inning thanks to a lead-off triple by Vanessa Moreno. After Merrida singled to the shortstop and put runners at first and third, Johnson hit a single to score Moreno. Merrida would then come home on a passed ball. Merrida would finish the day going 2-4 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.
Keli Harrell (12-4) and Toni Paisley (8-2) each pitched complete games giving up a combined eight hits.
The Pirates will be back in action on Thursday as they host UNC Greensboro in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
