Hose Pitches Pirates Past Michigan in Game 1

Greenville - GREENVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore Stephen Batts was one of three Pirates to collect two hits, while driving and scoring a run as No. 25 East Carolina defeated Michigan 2-1 in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

T.J. Hose posted his fourth consecutive win after working six full innings allowing three hits, one run and striking out four. Brett Butts (one hit, one strike out), Jason Neitz (two strikeouts) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning leading up to Shane Mathews seventh save of the season after a perfect ninth inning.

Michigan starter Zach Putman suffered the loss and dropped to 2-2 on the season after 5 2/3 innings of work, where the Pirates scored twice and picked up eight hits. Michael Powers pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief giving up one hit.

ECU (14-6) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame when Stephen Batts singled home Harrison Eldridge with a shot to left field. Eldridge started the inning with an infield single to short, moved over to second on a fielding error by Nate Recknagel at first then advanced to third on Brandon Henderson’s fielder’s choice.

Batts put the Pirates up 2-0 in the fifth inning when he singled to open the frame, then stole second and third base before crossing the plate on a throwing error by the catcher Chris Berset.

Michigan (6-5) closed within one, 2-1, in the top of the sixth inning when Eric Rose touched home on a Hose wild pitch. Kenny Fellows led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a Rose single to short before being thrown out at third on Jason Christian’s fielder’s choice bunt. With one out, Brad Roblin drew the second walk of the frame to load the bases and set up the Wolverine run.

The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader with a 4:25 first pitch scheduled.
