East Carolina held on for a 4-3 win in game one before rallying for seven runs during the night game in a 7-1 victory over ACC opponent Virginia at the ECU Softball Field.
In game one, the Pirates (16-6) had a 4-0 advantage heading into the top of the seventh inning, but Keli Harrell struck out Kierstie Cameron with a runner at first base after the Cavaliers had rallied to put up three runs. Harrell struck out six batters in a complete game effort and only encountered trouble in the seventh, when she gave up most notably a home run and a triple.
Conference USA Hitter-of-the-Week Jessica Johnson hit an RBI-double to center field in the first inning to score Kaui Tom and give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. ECU would add to their lead in the third inning when Paige Baggett delivered a two-RBI single to left field, scoring Tom and Charina Sumner. The Pirates would get what would be the winning run in the sixth inning when Johnson led off with a walk and was pinch-ran for by Sarah Bibee. Bibee would go ahead and steal second and then third base before advancing home on a wild throw to the outfield.
In the night game, Toni Paisley got the start in the circle after pitching two consecutive complete game shutouts. After giving up a run in the second inning on a triple by Lindsey Preuss, Paisley settled down only allowing three hits the rest of the way.
ECU took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Sumner hit a line drive two-run home run to right field to score Tom. Cristen Aona would later in the inning single home Christina Merrida to make the score 4-1. The Pirates would add insurances runs in the sixth inning on four straight hits by Beth Nolan, Tom, Sumner and Johnson.
East Carolina will resume play on Saturday, March 10 as they host conference opponent UCF beginning at 1 p.m.
