WASHINGTON (AP) -- A key congressman says the "apparently widespread use" of steroids in pro wrestling is sending a bad message to youngsters, and he wants the government to do something about it.

In a letter released Friday, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., requested that John Walters, director of the president's Office of National Drug Control Policy, "examine the systemic deficiencies in the testing policies and practices of professional wrestling."

Waxman, chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, has led a congressional investigation into steroid use in professional wrestling for more than a year, spurred in part by the murder-suicide deaths of wrestler Chris Benoit and his family in Georgia in June 2007.

Waxman is leaving the oversight committee to become chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and his letter offered a final look at the findings that focused on top pro wresting bodies World Wrestling Entertainment and Total Nonstop Action.

"Since the committee began its investigation last year, both the WWE and the TNA have made efforts to improve their steroid testing programs," Waxman wrote. "But these efforts suffer from a lack of independence and transparency. As a result of these weaknesses, the organizations appear unable to effectively prevent the use of steroids and other illegal drugs by professional wrestlers."

Waxman wrote that one former wrestler who agreed to talk to the committee on condition of anonymity said that, in the wrestling business, "steroids are like white socks and tape, they're just part of your gear."

"Over three million children and teenagers watch professional wrestling each week," Waxman's letter said. "The apparently widespread use of steroids in professional wrestling sends the wrong message to youth."

its all fake, but i still watch it. its more of entertaiment than anything else. if it was truly real, iwould say have them tested.

Well, you have to care now, b/c you have people like Chris Benoit up and killing their families b/c the steroids have turned their brains to mush. But I do agree, that there are other things the gov't should be worrying about right now...like our failing economy?

I believe they should have testing in wrestling they do it in other sports why not wrestling. to kevin it may be fake to an extent but im here to tell you these guys are athletes you try jumpimg off a cage onto a man without causing him serious injury. when u land on the matt it aint fake it hurts, and to all the haters out there if you think its so fake and easy to do why dont u try it and see how you feel after one day of training'

I say let 'em juice up. I agree with Buzz, we have more important things to worry about. I have never understood why anyone cares if any professional jock is on steroids anyway. They are the ones that will pay the price in the long run anyway. All those fine looking women that hover around them will be VERY DISAPPOINTED when it comes down to GO TIME. LOL! Steroids have been known to cause some serious problems with the operation of the male genitalia. OOPS! Maybe that wasn't such a good idea! :) In the end, why do we care if they are on steroids? Who has an answer for that question?

Personally, I'd like to see Henry Waxman jettisoned into the midst of a cage full of infuriated pro-wrestlers and UFC fighters, all of whom would proceed to puff away on cigars and cigarettes as they praticed their latest moves on him. Waxman makes my butt tired.

No. 1: wrestling is just goofy. No. 2: I THINK that our law makers have a whole lot of more important things to fix than steroids use among wrestlers, not that it's ok. But we do have an economic crisis, a war, and they are worried about steroids, go figure!!! That's Waxman for you. just me Buzz, thinkin' again.

Rob, I beg to differ to the "simple minded moron" remark. Not all who watch Nascar are simpleminded. I happen to enjoy Nascar. There is some skill involved with it. However with WWF, I find it disgusting. I agree that it sets a bad expample for kids. Some of it is just short of being X-rated.

I think steroids should be a requirement in pro wrestling.I like to see them all pumped up and acting crazy.

Posted by: Kevin Location: Greenville on Jan 5, 2009 at 09:38 AM
Pro Wrestling does not need steroid testing because its fake anyway.

Posted by: Rob Location: NC on Jan 5, 2009 at 09:27 AM
VBush, the same people who watch this are no different than the "simple minded morons" who pay large amounts of money to watch a bunch of corporate sponsored rednecks go 500 miles in a circle.

Maddog I'm a sports fan and I agree there are too many games on some weekends. Just used the remote and if you don't have one do what my dad did get one of the kids to change the channel.

I feel that Rep. Waxman has lost his mind! Is this guy for real? Who gives a rat's butt whether wrestlers take steroids? They are grown men. However I am beginning to question Rep. Waxman's mental age.

Posted by: VBush Location: MHCY on Jan 4, 2009 at 10:19 PM
LOL @ Maddog! Did you get stuck in a time warp? There are hundreds of channels available to pick from. Some of them ONLY show movies. To hear you talk, you would think we were living in the days of ABC,NBC, and CBS and one other channel on UHF. Come on, wake up. I will agree about the UFC and the WWE though. As far as the rest of it goes, no matter how many football games are on, there are many, many other choices if you don't like football or any other sport.

I was going to sit back and not comment on this story but after reading some of the things on here,I must say what I have to say. Both the UFC and the WWE ,,,,are trash. Outlaw them Both and why you are at it ,,Get some of that Football off T.V. Would like to sit down and see a Movie once and awhile on the weekend. I Know some of you are not going to like what I say but I really don't care. I Know you find this hard to understand,But there are people out there that work all week and would love to sit down and watch something beside Football and Basketball on every D-- CH. CAN YOU DIG IT! If not SO WHAT!

Posted by: Cat Location: Gboro on Jan 4, 2009 at 02:48 PM
Amen T! LOVE me some UFC! No way somebody can compare the two! The wrestlers are just actors, whereas the UFC fighters are dedicated, hard working people that train really hard!

The steroid use is obvious. Yes, it sends a bad message to youth. But, it's the iceberg tip. Wrestling's portrayal of women sends a bad message to kids. Wrestlers glamourizing & portraying themselves as pimps & various other less than admirable personas, send a bad message to kids. One could continue on & on listing the "bad messages" sent, because in short, virtually EVERYTHING about televised pro wrestling is ADULT entertainment & completely inappropriate for youth! Allowing youth to view it is irresponsible parenting! Parents who don't condone anything about it(for kids) & ban their exposure to it, send a good/COUNTER message to youth (which is their job, not congress). WWF merchandise & dolls in the toy aisle, marketed very specifically to young kids, is truly beyond disgusting though. Now that's a bad message sent to youth! Wonder if the dolls come with a pretend steriod needle accessory to juice up? Who'd buy such 4 their son?! The same parent who buys Bratz 4 their daughter!

can YOU smellllllllll what the ROCK is cooking ?

Posted by: T Location: Washington on Jan 4, 2009 at 06:44 AM
Yes, UFC fighters are in the entertainment business, however they should NEVER be compared to "professional wrestlers". These guys are jokes, whereas UFC fighters actually fight. Also, have you seen the pay scale for UFC fighters vs. entertainment wrestling? UFC fighters have heart. Entertainment wrestlers are simply in it for the money.

Who Cares. Let 'em juice up. What kind of simple minded moron watches this junk anyway?

Years ago, wrestling was wrestling. Athletes such as Dick The Brusier, The Crusher, Baron Von Raschke, Antonio Rocca, Argentine Apollo, "Wild" Bull Curry, Bobo Brazil, Mil Mascaras and many other legends didn't need that garbage. They had pure strength and it was pure competition. Today it is repulsive entertainment and these "wrestlers" are actors. I'm sure that Brusier and Crusher have rolled over in their graves. And in the immortal words of Baron Von Raschke, "And that is all the people need to know!"

Professional wrestling should be treated just like Ultimate Fighters and let true genetics and genuine entertainment be displayed.

WWE has a 3 strike system, 1st violation- 30 day suspension, 2nd violation- 60 day suspension, 3rd violation- Termination. Also this year WWE now releases talents names. Current WWE Champion NC Native Jeff Hardy was recently suspended for his 2nd offense, one more violation he will be terminated. He was Intercontinental Champion the 2nd time he was suspended. On Monday Night Raw he had to loose the title and was then suspended for 60 days.

Doesn't this guy have more important things to worry about. The government does not need to get involved in every stikin thing. LET PARENTS DO THIER JOBS!!!! We don't need the governments help on everything. Why is this guy even worried sbout this. Wrestling is as real as santa claus! Dang Nancy Regan told us drugs were bad. DANG!

Posted by: wr Location: nc on Jan 3, 2009 at 07:16 PM
This is entertainment tv and if anyone believes they aren't juiced they are crazy.

Posted by: DK Location: Greenville on Jan 3, 2009 at 07:16 PM
Wrestling is entertainment. Steroid use should be at their own discretion. Just because kids watch it does not mean steroids should be outlawed. Its not the wrestlers job to be a role model. Thats what parents are for. If you make them stop steroids, then you gotta make the rappers stop promoting drugs and violence.

everything in wrestling is fake... the muscles should be too
