Joe Gibbs Racing faces stiff penalties
after two of the team's Toyotas were found to have magnets under
the gas pedals following yesterday's Nationwide race at Michigan
NASCAR inspectors discovered the magnets while preparing to do
tests on horsepower numbers. Toyota has won 15 of 25 races this
season in Nationwide, and all but one came in a Camry fielded by
Gibbs. NASCAR last month ordered the Toyota Nationwide teams to use
a smaller spacer to cut about 15 horsepower in their motors.
Yesterday's incident was apparently an effort to keep the
current numbers from looking too strong in the latest test.
Tony Stewart finished third in one of the cars, and 18-year-old
rookie Joey Logano was seventh.
NASCAR VP of competition Robin Pemberton said officials will
meet tomorrow and Tuesday to determine what penalties will be
Gibbs team president J.D. Gibbs said JGR takes full
responsibility for the actions of its employees, calling it "a
really poor, foolish decision on the part of our key guys."
