Phelps Wins 3rd Gold Medal

BEIJING (AP) -- Michael Phelps has captured his third gold medal at the Olympics as he continues his quest for an unprecedented eight gold medals at the Summer Games. Phelps won the 200 freestyle in world record time of one minute, 42.96 seconds. That beat his old mark of 1:43.86 set at last year's world championships in Australia.

The 200 freestyle was one of only two events in which he failed to win the gold in Athens four years ago. Phelps is also slated to swim in the 200-meter butterfly semifinal Tuesday.

It's Tuesday in Beijing and it's a good day in the pool for other U.S. swimmers as well:

-- Natalie Coughlin (KAHG'-lihn) of the United States won the gold medal in women's 100 backstroke in China. She's the first woman to ever defend her Olympic title in that event.

-- Aaron Peirsol of the United States wins the gold in men's 100-meter backstroke in a world record.

Also Tuesday, the U.S. men's basketball team hits the court against Angola in its second game of the competition. The NBA All-Star-ladened American team is heavily favored.
