The Carolina Hurricanes have signed minor-league forward Dwight Helminen to a one-year contract.

Carolina announced the two-way deal Thursday that will pay Helminen $475,000 at the NHL level or $100,000 if he is sent to the minors.

Helminen played last season in Finland, finishing with 20 goals and 25 assists with JYP Jyvaskyla of SM-Liiga, the top pro league in that country.

He was taken by the Edmonton Oilers in the eighth round of the 2002 draft. He played three seasons at the University of Michigan, then spent his North American pro career with Hartford of the American Hockey League and Charlotte of the ECHL before heading to Finland.
