Hodding Carter's Longshot Olympic Dreams Get Longer

W. Hodding Carter IV's longshot dreams to make the U.S. Olympic swimming team just got longer.

The son of an well-known official in President Jimmy Carter's administration and the grandson of a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist came in second Saturday in the 50-meter freestyle for men age 45-49 at a New England swim meet.

Carter's time was 27.37 seconds at the New England Master's Long Course Championship meet at Vermont's Middlebury College, well below the winning time of 25.69 seconds.

It was nearly three seconds off his personal best and five seconds off a world class time.

Carter's friend Steve Holmes says he doesn't know what the qualifying time for the Olympic trials will be, but he doubts Carter will make it.
