Cary - Number 2 overall seed North Carolina had no trouble with Coastal Carolina in game one of their Super Regional series in Cary, whipping the Chanticleers 9-4 on a day that saw temperatures reach 102 degrees on the field.
Greenville native Alex White pitched 7 strong innings for the Heels, giving up just 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out 6. White said the heat was a factor.
"The trainers kept me cool all day throughout the innings with wet rags. I got through it and just drank a lot of water."
White says the team is focused on getting back to Omaha.
"That is the key right there we are one win away. Coastal is a very good team; they are not going to just fold on us. We have to win one more game and be ready."
Coastal Carolina pitchers Joey Haug and starter Bobby Gagg were ejected for arguing balls and strikes after they had already been removed from the game. They will both be suspended 4 games.
The Tar Heels can close out Coastal Sunday at 7pm to earn their 3rd straight trip to Omaha.
