The K-Tribe beat the Southern Division leading Salem Avalanche 4-2 Monday night at Grainger Stadium. Kinston took advantage of a rocky beginning by Salem starter Casey Hudspeth. Hudspeth hit Kinston’s Jared Goedert with the bases loaded to put the K-Tribe on the board in the first inning. Kinston extended their lead in the second inning with an RBI single by Adam Davis. Up 2-0 in the third inning, Nick Weglarz scored on an RBI single by Niuman Romero. A bases loaded walk by Salem starter Hudspeth put Kinston up 4-0. Johnny Drennen went 3-for-5 with three singles for Kinston.
Kinston got a solid starting performance for Paolo Espino, who went four plus innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs. Heath Taylor (1-1) got the win for Kinston. Jim Deters was awarded his second hold of the season and Luis Perdomo got his first save.
Kinston takes on Salem in game two of the three game series Tuesday night at Grainger Stadium. Steven Wright will take the mound for the K-Tribe. First pitch 7pm. Kinston will have a special 11am middle school game on Wednesday for the final game of the three game series with Salem.
