MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Mount Olive forward Brandon Streeter has been named 2007-08 Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, as selected by the conference head coaches. Streeter is joined on the first team by Trojan shooting guard Kendrick Easley, while point guard Justin Melton earned honorable mention. Streeter becomes the second men’s basketball conference player of the year in Mount Olive history and also becomes the second Trojan student-athlete in 2007-08 to win conference player of the year honors.
Streeter, a 6-6 senior from Jacksonville, N.C. (White Oak HS), ranks third in the nation with a 68.0 field goal percentage. He is the top scorer and rebounder in the conference, averaging 17.9 points and 9.2 rebounds per contest. Streeter is also nationally ranked in rebounding.
A three-time Conference Carolinas Player of the Week this season, Streeter has recorded 13 double-doubles, including his sixth in a row in Thursday’s Conference Carolinas Tournament semifinal win against Barton. He scored a career-high 28 points to go with 10 rebounds against Belmont Abbey. He pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds Thursday, surpassing his previous career best of 17 rebounds against Queens in November. Streeter averaged 23.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per contest in his last eight games.
Easley, a 6-1 sophomore from Norfolk, Va., was the Division II Bulletin National Player of the Month in November. Easley earned MVP honors in the season-opening Mount Olive Pickle Classic, scoring a career-high 36 points against Wingate and following with 22 points and 12 rebounds against West Virginia State. Both opponents were ranked in the top 10 in preseason polls. He ranks third in the conference in scoring at 17.1 points per game and has two of the top three single-game scoring performances of the season. Easley is also nationally ranked with an 82.6 free throw percentage.
Melton, a 5-11 junior from Yorktown, Va., ranks second in the conference with 4.1 assists per game and fourth with 1.8 steals per contest. Melton recorded his first collegiate double-double this season with 17 points and a career-high 10 assists against Pfeiffer. He matched a career high with 19 points against nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne and set another career best with four blocked shots against Queens. Melton is averaging 8.2 points per game.
Streeter becomes the first Trojan men’s basketball conference player of the year since Chris McDonald won the award in 1998-99. Streeter also joins Trojan women’s volleyball student-athlete Sam Mitchell among Mount Olive’s Conference Carolinas Player of the Year winners in 2007-08. Last spring, four Trojan student-athletes captured conference player of the year honors.
Top-seeded Mount Olive (23-6) plays host to Queens Saturday in the championship game of the 2008 Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Trojans advanced with a first-round 85-75 win Monday over Coker and a 79-71 semifinal win Thursday over two-time defending conference champion and last year’s national champion Barton. Saturday’s winner earns an automatic bid to the East Regional of the 2008 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship.
