Pirates Wrap Up Second Week Of Spring Football

Calling it a "spirited" start, East Carolina Head Football Coach Skip Holtz wrapped up the second week of spring workouts by guiding the Pirates through a two-hour practice late Thursday afternoon on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.

The session was ECU's fourth of the spring and second conducted in pads.

The Pirates completed their first phase of the spring with detailed fundamental individual and team drill work, and will begin in-depth offensive and defensive schematic emphasis after returning from the Spring Break holidays. ECU will have 10 more days remaining that will feature contact work, including two intra-squad scrimmages and the Purple-Gold Game scheduled for April 12.

"In all, I feel like we've gotten off to a pretty spirited start," Holtz said. "We had a good first two days in pads and got a lot accomplished. We will go more into a consistent scrimmage mode when we get back and have an opportunity to put together our depth chart. We need to continue to prepare and work hard over here, knowing that the two-deep decisions will come from the stadium when we start the scrimmage phase."

East Carolina continued its focus on the delivery and execution of fundamentals Thursday by working through different assignments such as situational drills and a brief, but live, full-speed 11-on-11 controlled scrimmage segment that concluded the workout. Upon their return from the break, Holtz and his staff will begin to define the process of developing the program's first official depth chart, which will be released after the playing of ECU's initial full scrimmage, scheduled for Friday, March 28.

"We were able to get in a lot of team and situational work today," Holtz said. "We still have a lot of bodies out there but not a lot of structure, which is somewhat commonplace this time of year with a lot of young players. With that said, the spring remains a teaching process - one big classroom with many reps."

Thursday's practice preceded a 10-day layoff for the Pirates, who will return to open their third week of workouts Monday, March 17.
