Mount Olive jumped to No. 1 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30 and Ping Baseball Division II Top 30, marking the first time in school history a Mount Olive athletics team in any sport has reached No. 1 in a national poll. The Trojans, which had been ranked No. 2 in both polls in each of the last two weeks, are a unanimous No. 1 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball Top 30.
Mount Olive (16-1) posted a 4-0 record last week and extended its winning streak to 14. The Trojans opened Conference Carolinas play with a three-game sweep at St. Andrews. Mount Olive, which also defeated Shaw 15-3 in a non-conference contest, reached double figures in all four games and outscored its opponents 50-8.
The Trojans took over the top spot after defending national champion and previously top-ranked Tampa (Fla.) suffered its first two losses of the season. Tampa dropped to No. 3 in both polls, while Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) moved up a spot to No. 2 in both polls.
Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday, weather permitting, as the Trojans travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to take on Chowan in a non-conference doubleheader. Forecasts call for a 60 percent chance of rain. Game time is 1 p.m.
Mount Olive plays its first-ever home contests as a national No. 1 team this weekend as the Trojans play host to Anderson for a three-game Conference Carolinas series at Scarborough Field. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon and conclude the series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
