Led by a career-high 35 points from LaCoya Terry, East Carolina held on for the 85-82 win over UAB Thursday evening in Minges Coliseum. ECU improves to 13-13 overall, 7-6 in Conference USA action and have now won three in a row, while the Blazers fall to 12-14, 8-5 in league play. The Lady Pirates are now just one game out of fourth place in the league, with just three games remaining in the regular season.
Terry was fouled as she went up for a shot with 1:18 to play, connecting on the shot and the free throw, giving the Lady Pirates the 82-79 lead. The Blazers had a shot at the rim but it would not fall, and ECU came up with the rebound. A pair of Terry free throws iced the game for East Carolina, as they would hold on for the 85-82 win.
Diamond Rogers' three-pointer knotted the game at 22 a-piece with 9:18 on the clock in the opening half, but Jasmine Young's basket on the following possession put ECU back on top 24-22. Britany Jones connected on her fourth three-pointer of the night to put the Blazers up three, 41-38, with 1:25 to play in the half, but Gabriela Husarova answered, scoring a trey of her own, tying the game at 41-all. Crystal McFadden's jumper went in with 7.9 seconds on the clock, give UAB the slight edge heading into the lockerroom.
ECU opened the second half on a 9-0 run, taking the 50-43 lead at the 17:36 mark. McFadden's layup at the 11:00 mark knotted the game at 60 a-piece, while five unanswered points from Jones gave the Blazers the five point, 65-60 lead, with 9:38 on the clock. Fatiha Salaam's three-pointer at the 5:52 mark put UAB up five, 72-67, forcing ECU to call a timeout. A pair of Allison Spivey free throws cut the lead down to three, before McFadden hit a jumper to push the lead back out to five, 74-69, with 5:20 remaining. An Impris Manning jumper pulled the Lady Pirates within one, 74-73, but another Jones' trey put the Blazers back up four. After a Lauren Cochran putback at the 3:18 mark, Terry grabbed the carom on the UAB miscue and Young converted for the basket, tying the game at 77 a-piece with 2:44 remaining.
Terry led all scorers with a personal-best 35 points, going 13-for-24 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. Husarova added 13 points and five boards while Young notched her third career double-double with 10 points and a career-best 13 assists. For UAB, Jones went 7-for-9 from behind the arc, finishing with a team-high 25 points. McFadden added 23 points while Rogers had 11.
The Lady Pirates will host Memphis on Saturday, Feb. 23 in the final home game of the 2007-08 season. Senior Nicole Days will be honored prior to the 2:00 p.m. tip.
