GREENVILLE, N.C. – The fifth largest crowd in Minges Coliseum history, 3,227, saw the East Carolina Lady Pirates defeat UCF 78-69 Sunday afternoon in the Think Pink game. ECU improves to 12-13 overall, 6-6 in Conference USA action while the Knights fall to 8-17, 1-11 in league play. LaCoya Terry scored her 1,000th career point in the contest, joining Jasmine Young in the 1,000 point club this season.
A pair of Lauren Cochran free throws tied the game at 12 a-piece at the 14:16 mark. The Knights responded, firing off five straight points to retake the lead, 17-12. Allison Spivey’s trey with 13 minutes remaining in the half pulled ECU within two, 17-15. The Knights used a 8-0 run to increase their lead to eight, 27-19, before Angelica Mealing’s three-pointer gave UCF their largest lead of the game, 11, at 30-19, with 6:47 to play in the half. The Knights took the eight point, 38-30 lead into the break.
The Lady Pirates opened the second half on a 9-2 run, cutting the Knight lead down to one 40-39, with 17:41 on the clock. Jasmine Young’s three-pointer at the 15:35 mark tied the game at 46 a-piece. Chelsi Wiley’s jumper put UCF back on top, but a pair of Young free throws knotted the game back up at 48-all with 14:20 to play. Nicole Days’ putback and a trey by Terry gave the Lady Pirates the 53-50 advantage with 11:33 to play, their first lead since the 18:10 mark in the first half when ECU had the early 5-4 edge. Cochran’s basket off the glass increase the ECU lead to five, 55-50. Spivey’s three-point play with 5:56 to play in the contest increased the Lady Pirate lead to nine, 65-56. ECU led by as many as ten, cruising to the 78-69 win.
Spivey led the Lady Pirates with 14 points, while Terry chipped in 13, giving her 1,012 for her career. Young also finished with 13 points while Cochran added 10. Daniels led all scorers with 20 points while Wiley added 16. After shooting nearly 50 percent from the field (48.5) in the first half, UCF shot just 38.9 percent in the second half. The Lady Pirates, however, shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, propelling them to the victory.
East Carolina will host UAB on Thursday, Feb. 21 in an 8:00 p.m. tilt. The game will be broadcast live on CSTV. The Lady Pirates will then host Memphis on Saturday, Feb. 23 in the final home game of the 2007-08 season. Senior Nicole Days will be honored prior to the 2:00 p.m. tip.
