Gamecocks' Coach To Retire After This Season

South Carolina's Dave Odom plans to retire at the end of the current basketball season.

The 65-year-old coach took over the Gamecocks program ahead of the 2001-2002 campaign. He led them to the NCAA tournament in 2004 and back-to-back NIT titles the following years. But he's recently come under fire for the team's ragged and inconsistent play. The Gamecocks are 9-and-8 overall and 1-and-2 in the Southeastern Conference.

Odom was never able to duplicate the success he had in 12 years at Wake Forest and says pressure from critics is the reason for his departure.

He had four 20-win seasons with South Carolina, the last in 2005-06.

Odom is 401-and-268 in 22 years as coach of South Carolina, Wake
Forest and East Carolina.
