Va. Tech Rolls Lady Pirates 72-46

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Three Hokies scored in double figures to lead Virginia Tech to the 72-46 win over East Carolina in the championship game of the 2007 Hokie Hardwood Classic. With the win, the Hokies improve to 12-2 while the Lady Pirates fall to 6-7, completing their non-conference portion of the 2007-08 season.

East Carolina jumped out to the early 10-5 lead five minutes into the game, scoring six unanswered points. The Hokies answered, putting together a 10-0 run sparked by a Lindsay Biggs three-pointer to take the lead, 15-10, with 11:55 remaining in the opening half. A Jasmine Young jumper and a Tiahana Bowens layup pulled the Lady Pirates within one, 15-14, but Brittany Cook’s basket extended the VT lead back out to three with 10:26 to play. ECU cut the deficit once again, this time on a Gabriela Husarova basket, making the score 17-16, but five straight Virginia Tech points gave the Hokies the six point, 22-16 lead with less than eight minutes to play. After the Lady Pirates cut the lead down to three, it was Virginia Tech who went on an 8-4 run over the final five minutes of the half to take the seven point, 30-23 lead into the break.

The second half was all Virginia Tech, as they opened the half on an 8-4 run, increasing its lead to 11, 38-27, with 17 minutes to play in the contest. Young’s jumper briefly stopped the Hokie run, but Andrea Barbour’s basket with 16:31 on the clock sparked a 14-3 rally by Virginia Tech, giving them the 52-32 advantage with 8:52 remaining. The Lady Pirates were held seven and a half minutes without a field goal, allowing the Hokies to increase their lead to 31, 72-41, before ECU scored the final five points of the contest to make the final score 72-46 in favor of Virginia Tech.

Terry and Nicole Days led ECU with nine points a piece, while Days added 11 rebounds. Barbour, who was named Tournament MVP, had 25 points on the day. Cook added 15 while Utahya Drye chipped in 10. The Lady Pirates shot an ice cold 27.4 percent from the field while the Hokies shot 44.8. Terry and Young were also named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.

The Lady Pirates will travel to Huntington, W.Va. for a Jan. 5 match-up against Marshall to open up Conference USA action. Tip-off from the Cam Henderson Center is slated for 5:00 p.m.
