With their top two quarterbacks injured, the San Francisco 49ers have signed Chris Weinke to give them some depth at that position.
The 35-year-old Weinke has been out of football since the Carolina Panthers released him in March after six seasons spent mostly as a backup.
Alex Smith's season is over with a shoulder injury, and backup Trent Dilfer isn't expected to play because of a concussion.
Shaun Hill, a career third-stringer, is expected to start Saturday against Cincinnati. Hill had never thrown an NFL pass in six seasons before last weekend.
