East Carolina will look to secure its first win of the season over Division I foe Saturday night when it host Liberty inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates opened the season with an 18-point win over Limestone a week ago before losing to Richmond in overtime Tuesday night. Liberty is also seeking its first win over a DI opponent. The Flames went 0-3 at the World Vision Classic in Fresno last weekend before returning home to defeat Coker College on Tuesday.
ECU and Liberty have one very unique tie. LU Director of Athletics Jeff Barber, a native of Greenville, graduated with a bachelor of science degree from East Carolina in 1981 and is a former Assistant Director of the Pirate Club.
The Pirates will be looking to avenge an eight-point loss in Lynchburg a year ago. ECU jumped out to a 17-3 lead, but the Flames cut the lead to five at the half. LU outscored the Pirates by 13 in the second half to record its first-ever win over ECU in six meetings.
Liberty returns seven players that played against the Pirates last seasons (Justin Holland, B.J. Jenkins, Tyler Baker, Anthony Smith, Alex McLean, Russell Monroe, Rell Porter).
ECU coach Mack McCarthy is 2-0 against Liberty, posting wins over the Flames at Chattanooga and Virginia Commonwealth.
