ECU Volleyball Ends Season With Loss In C-USA Tourney

The East Carolina volleyball team fell to top-seed and host Marshall 3-1 in the C-USA Tournament quarterfinal on Friday evening inside the Cam Henderson Center. The Pirates end their season with a record of 16-17 while the Herd improves to 23-8 overall and advance to the semifinals against the winner of the last quarterfinal match between Tulsa and Memphis. Senior Kelley Wernert ended her career with her 14th double-double of the season and 27th of her four years.

Game one was tight early but with Marshall leading 10-9, it used two huge runs to put the frame out of reach 30-19.

The Herd played from ahead all of game two but ECU rallied to tie the frame at 29. The teams traded points until Marshall was able to score three consecutive times to take the game 34-32.

The Pirates dominated the third game, taking leads of 15-9 and 21-12 on their way to a 30-19 win to stay alive in the match.

The teams traded points early in the final frame until with the Herd leading 21-19, it out-scored East Carolina 9-6 to close out the match.

Wernert put down 16 kills while adding 11 digs and six total blocks to lead three Pirates in double-figures. The Hoffman Estates, Ill. native has recorded double-digits in 60 of her last 65 contests. Sophomores Stephanie Turner and Peyton Thompson gave ECU fans a glimpse of the bright future ahead for the program as they slapped 13 and 12 kills respectively. Junior Trish Monroe paced the defense, digging up a team-high 18. Freshman Katie Koop concluded her freshman campaign by dishing out 46 assists, an average of 11.50 per game.

Four Marshall players, including two seniors, recorded double-digit kills, led by three-time C-USA Player-of-the Year Kelly-Anne Billingy with 23. She also led the Herd on defense, notching 17 digs. C-USA Freshman-of-the-Year Elizabeth Fleming handed out 65 assists.
