Four Lady Monarchs scored in double figures to led Old Dominion to an 88-66 victory over East Carolina Tuesday evening at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The Lady Pirates fall to 1-1 on the early season, while ODU improves to 2-0 on the year.
East Carolina jumped out to the early 6-4 lead on a basket by Impris Manning. After a free throw and bucket by the Lady Monarchs, it was ECU's Shuanda Ashford's three-pointer that put the Lady Pirates back on top, 11-9, with 15:51 on the clock. T.J. Jordan's four-point play gave ODU the 14-11 advantage, before the Lady Pirates went on a 9-2 run to go up 20-16 at the under-twelve media timeout. The Lady Monarchs tied the game at 22 a-piece on a breakaway layup by Jessica Canady with 10:27 remaining in the first half. A Jasmine Young trey with 8:09 remaining put ECU back on top, 25-24, and a layup from Lauren Cochran and a pair of free throws by Manning extended the Lady Pirates lead to four, 29-25, with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Lady Pirates held on to the lead until the final seven seconds of the half when ODU's Tiffany Green hit a jumper to take the 39-38 lead into the break.
The Lady Monarchs continued their momentum from the first half, going on a 12-2 run to start the second half, increasing their lead to 11 at 51-40, with 16:06 to play in the contest. Sparked by a LaCoya Terry steal and layup, the Lady Pirates went on an 8-0 rally to cut the ODU lead down to eight, at 63-55 with 8:42 to play. Jen Nuzzo's three-pointer stopped the run and put the Lady Monarchs back up by 11, at 66-55. Old Dominion put together another late rally, this time a 12-2 run, to increase its lead to 15, 86-61, with two minutes to play in the contest.
Cochran scored in double figures for the second straight contest, netting a career-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Terry finished the night with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Canady led all scorers with 18 points, while teammate Jasmine Parker added 14, including four three-pointers.
The Lady Monarchs shot 54.8 percent from the field while ECU shot 48 percent. The Lady Pirates had 32 turnovers on the night, which ODU turned into 30 points.
The Lady Pirates will hit the road this weekend, as the team travels to the state of New York to face the Blackbirds of Long Island University Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.
