GREENVILLE, N.C. - Five Lady Pirates scored in double figures to lead East Carolina to a 97-52 win over Presbyterian Sunday afternoon in Minges Coliseum. Lauren Cochran and Allison Spivey led ECU, as they each scored 14 points. The Lady Pirates are now 1-0, winning their first season-opener in three seasons, while the Blue Hose fall to 0-2.
In an even balanced attack by the Lady Pirates, every player that was dressed out scored at least five points.
Presbyterian jumped out to the early 3-0 lead on a jumper by Kristin Kidd. Jasmine Young's first three-pointer of the season tied the game at three a-piece before the Blue Hose went on a 5-0 run to jump out with an 8-6 advantage. The Lady Pirates tied the game at 10-10 on a pair of Impris Manning free throws with 13:53 on the clock.
After exchanging baskets over the next two minutes, it was ECU that put together a 12-1 run, sparked by a Young basket at the 9:39 mark, to take the 28-15 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. After a jumper by Presbyterian's Sharie Hopkins to cut the Lady Pirate lead to 11, a Shaunda Ashford trey sparked another run by ECU, this time an 11-0 spurt. Manning's layup at the 3:16 mark put ECU up 39-17. The Blue Hose went on a 6-2 run to end the half, making the halftime score 41-24 in favor of the Lady Pirates.
The second half was all ECU, as the Lady Pirates opened the stanza going on a 14-4 rally, including one of Ashford's three treys of the night, giving the home team the 57-28 advantage with 13:15 to play in the contest. Spivey's barrage of treys began with her first at the 12:44 mark, extending the Lady Pirates' lead to 30, at 60-30. Cochran's putback with less than 12 minutes to play sparked an 18-7 run by East Carolina, including another Ashford trey.
Presbyterian scored back-to-back baskets to cut the ECU lead to 35, at 80-45, with 6:33 on the clock. Another Spivey trey sparked a 7-0 spurt by the Lady Pirates, extending their lead out to 42 with less than five minutes to play. Kim Gay hit back-to-back shots to put ECU up by 44 with a minute to play. Spivey's trey with 41 seconds on the clock gave the Lady Pirates their largest lead of the contest, at 47, but a jumper by Chelsea Wright with 28 seconds to play cut the ECU lead down to 45. A last second three-point attempt by Jessica Honesty to get the Lady Pirates to 100 points hit the rim and bounced out, making the final score 97-52.
Spivey and Cochran led all scorers with 14 points, tying Cochran's career-high in points from a year ago. Both Spivey and Ashford put on a show in their collegiate debuts, as they each scored in double figures, with 14 and 11 respectively. Ashford hit three treys in the contest while Spivey had four, leading ECU to the most three pointers made in over a year, with 11. Gabriela Husarova was one point shy of tying her career mark, with 11 on the day. Preseason al-conference junior Young also scored in double figures, adding 10. Senior Nicole Days led the game with 10 rebounds, adding eight points and three steals. LaCoya Terry registered eight points, 10 assists and two blocks on the day.
The Lady Pirates shot 47.1 percent from the field and a red-hot 61.5 percent from behind the arc. Presbyterian shot just 33.3 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from the charity stripe. Hopkins and Bridget Takach led the Blue Hose, each scoring 11 points.
The Lady Pirates will host Old Dominion Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. as part of a double-header with the men's team.
