Girardi On Board In The Bronx

Joe Girardi is back in Yankee pinstripes. He's replacing his mentor, Joe Torre, as manager of the Bronx Bombers.

Girardi has one year of experience as a bench boss. He was named
the 2006 National League Manager of the Year with Florida before he
was fired, apparently for clashing with owner Jeffrey Loria and others who were above him in the organization's food chain.

Girardi was a hard-nosed catcher who played on three Yankees teams that won the World Series. He then served as their bench coach under Torre in 2005 before taking the Marlins' job. He was a TV announcer for the Yanks this year.

In choosing Girardi, the Yankees passed over Don Mattingly, who has told the team he has no interest in returning next year as bench coach or in any other coaching position.

The Yanks also interviewed first base coach, and former big league manager, Tony Pena.
