Yankees Continue Search For New Manager

The Yankees begin the interview process today as they search for a new manager. Former Florida Marlins skipper Joe Girardi is scheduled to speak with team executives at their spring training complex in Tampa. Yankees bench coach Don Mattingly is due in tomorrow and first base coach Tony Pena will be interviewed on Wednesday.

Mattingly is the presumed favorite to replace Joe Torre, who turned down the club's contract offer last week. Mattingly spent this season as Torre's bench coach following three years as the team's hitting coach.

Hank Steinbrenner, the son of owner George Steinbrenner, says four or five people will be interviewed, but, despite a lot of speculation, Bobby Valentine isn't on the list. Valentine is a former bench boss of the New York Mets and currently managing in Japan.

Steinbrenner also says the Yankees plan to discuss whether to ask for a meeting with Alex Rodriguez, who has until the 10th day after the World Series to decide whether to terminate the final three seasons of his record $252 million, 10-year contract and become a free agent. The Yankees have said that if Rodriguez ends the contract, they'll drop out of the bidding.
