Chapel Hill - Brandon Tate scored on a long reverse in a spurt of 27 points to start the game while Connor Barth kicked four field goals to lead North Carolina past Miami 33-27, giving coach Butch Davis a victory against his former program.
Anthony Elzy ran for 95 yards and a score for the Tar Heels (2-4, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who turned in a dominating performance to take a 27-0 lead at halftime then hung on as the Hurricanes twice rallied to within a touchdown in the second half.
Darnell Jenkins had a 97-yard touchdown catch, the second-longest play in school history, for Miami (4-2, 1-1), which looked flat to start the game and never recovered. Kyle Wright threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns, but he also had four interceptions, including one at North Carolina's 3-yard line with about 6 minutes left and Miami trailing 33-20.
Miami got a a late touchdown from Javarris James to close to within six with 1:17 left, but the Tar Heels recovered the onside kick to seal Davis' first league victory and end a four-game losing streak.
Also from the ACC, Wake Forest outslugged Duke 41-36 in Durham. The Deacs improve to 3-2 while the Devils fall to 1-5.
