The 2007-08 East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the new season with the always competitive and lively Purple and Gold intrasquad meet at the Minges Natatorium on Thursday.
The women's Purple team defeated its Gold rivals, 132-130, while the men's Purple squad also squeaked out a close victory, 135-132.
Senior Rebecca Perry won a trio of events (50 free, 100 free, 100 back) as did freshman Tommy Ryan (100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM).
Other multiple event winners included: sophomore Rachel Blue (200 free, 500 free), freshman Thiago Calvacanti (500 free, 1000 free), junior Amanda Duncan (100 fly, 200 fly), freshman Stephanie Harper (100 breast, 200 breast), junior Adam Papendick (50 free, 100 free) and freshman Andrew Stoker (100 fly, 200 fly).
"It was a very competitive meet and the kids trained extremely hard all week in preparation for it,” said coach Rick Kobe. “We had some outstanding swims today and I’m very excited about getting the dual meet season started next weekend.”
The Pirates’ dual meet season officially begins on Oct. 13 at Davidson.
