Repairs are underway at Dowdy Ficklen Stadium in Greenville to correct the bleachers which gave way at last week's game.

Since the bleachers will not be in place for Saturday's game, ECU students are permitted to take cushions to the game.

The size of the cushion can't exceed 18 inches.

It's expected the bleachers will be repaired in time for the home game on October 16.

East Carolina University says 7,000 seats will have to be fixed after several rows of new bleachers failed during Sunday's game.

About a dozen fans received minor injuries when several rows of bleachers in the new section of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium collapsed.

ECU's Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Operations Bill Bagnell says T.A. Loving, along with ECU contractors and a structural engineer determined that the mechanical fasteners holding the bleachers to the concrete pulled away, causing the bleachers to fail.

Bagnell says the construction company is now looking into ways to fasten the bleachers directly to the concrete floor, and not to the vertical riser.

ECU says the Boneyard will be open for Saturday's Memphis game. If sections are not yet complete, the university says the students will just have to sit or stand on the concrete.

Previous Story

ECU Officials have released a statement regarding fans who were injured when several rows of bleachers gave way.

The statement says:

About a dozen fans suffered minor injuries today when several rows of bleachers in the new east end zone section of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium gave way in the first quarter of the ECU-Tulsa football game.

Those injured were treated by stadium personnel for scrapes, cuts and bruises. There was a report that one person was treated for a dislocated shoulder.

About a dozen rows of bleachers were removed from the stadium, and the fans who were occupying those seats were relocated to other locations in the stadium.

Construction on the new end zone section of the stadium was completed over the summer with the addition of about 7,000 seats. It is now the student section in the stadium.

University officials will follow up with those injured to see if any additional treatment is needed. Officials will also meet with contractors to determine the cause of the accident . The next Pirates home game is against Memphis on Saturday.

Sam, you just hit the nail on the head there man. To "To Sam" I would'nt be talking everything as all great for UNC cause as much as UNC will face, that athletic program will go down for quite sometime, especially in football. I would have kept my mouth shut in the first place if I were you UNC FAN, and stop pretending you like ECU as well. Only a UNC fan would claim that they are the best in everything, whereas there are fans of quite a few out-of-state schools, especially Va Tech who respect ECU way more than UNC. ECU has had a much better recent history in football than UNC. UNC might have had a team in the 80's, but since the 90's all they ever have been good in was during the Mack Brown era, but they still have not had the major victories like ECU has had. Those UNC fans better get the tissues ready after ECU beats them in that dirt hole of a college town on the other side of Raleigh.

To "To Sam" it's obvious that you have never been to a college baseball game, as most UNC people don't even care for baseball. Go look at the websites and check out the average attendances of those baseball games for the 2 schools. ECU averages about 3 times as many fans as UNC at the baseball games. Also, the NCAA needs to look into the baseball team during this investigation as Mike Fox has ran a dirty program for years like Butch Davis has. I've heard where 2 of the recent UNC baseball players, (one of them a star pitcher in the pros now) ended up going there due to taking bribe money about 4-5 years ago. Also, "To Sam" you are right we will never be a UNC. We will never cheat to get to what the fans would like to see. We would never run dirty programs like UNC has over the years. We wont have a law school that breeds dirty lying politicians that bring the state down. We wont have a bunch of anti-hunting anti-fishing nut jobs like UNC has. You still can't win a title in baseball.
