Tarboro Holds Off Carver To Win 2A Crown

WINSTON-SALEM, N. C. (AP) -- Todd Gurley II scored two touchdowns and Tarboro's defense came up with an insurance score Saturday to beat Winston-Salem Carver 21-13 in the Class 2-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship.

Gurley, named the game's MVP, ran for 99 yards and one touchdown, and pulled in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jamias Williams late in the third quarter that gave the Vikings a 14-13 lead.

On the Yellow Jackets' next possession, Vikings linebacker Markell Howell returned an interception 36 yards for a score. Tarboro's defense then stopped a potential game-tying drive at the goal line to give the Vikings (16-0) their second straight 2-A title and the third state title overall.

Madison Mills threw for 105 yards and one touchdown, and Channon Crawford ran for 52 yards and another score for Carver (13-3), which fell short in its bid to win its third state title.

@Mr Obvious - FYI sir, several years in 1997 the Tarboro administrative staff wrote the NFL properties and trademark division asking permission to use the Minnesota logo on our helmets. We were granted permission to use horns on the helmet. I know this to be factual because as principal at the time, I wrote the letter. It is on file at THS with the athletic department. Use of the Viking head logo was allowed without issue because Tarboro had used that logo and the purple and gold colors within the logo prior to the establishment of the NFL Viking franchise. That being said, THS is not in anyway in violation of copyright or property right infringements. Congratulations to Coach Craddock and the 2 time state championship Vikings.
