Chapel Hill -- Tarboro used stellar defense to beat Mountain Heritage 28-3 in the class 2-A state championship game at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.
The Cougars scored the first points of the game on a short field goal in the first quarter but Tarboro responded with four unanswered touchdowns.
Damarius Harper and Chris Lane scored first half touchdowns to give the Vikings a 14-3 lead at halftime. Lane was later named the games most valuable player.
It's been 25 years since Tarboro last won a football state championship when they beat A. L. Brown to win the 3-A Championship in 1984.
