The Creswell Tigers remained on top of the Tideland and remain perfect at 7-0 on the season as they crushed the Mattamuskeet Lakers at home Friday night to the delight of the large homecoming crowd.
The Tigers would win the coin toss and choose to kick off to start the game. From there the tone would be set to what type of night the Lakers were about to encounter. After just 3 plays the Tiger defense would have driven the Lakers back 6 yards toward their own goal and leave the visitors shaking their heads.
Facing a 4th and 16 deep in their own territory the Laker punter would kick the ball almost straight up into the air to every ones surprise. As players began to move away from the ball Tiger running back Tommy Cherry would come rushing in and catch the ball on a bounce to dart past the unsuspecting Lakers and scamper 24 yards to put the Tigers on the board early. The 2pt conversion would be good by Timelle Sawyer and with only 2:13 gone in the 1st the Tigers would be up 8-0.
Over the next few series both teams would make some offensive progress but each time the teams would be forced to punt. It was then that the Tigers would go to their trusted Power "T" formation to get yards the old fashioned way, nose to nose. Just 2 plays later Timelle Sawyer would follow his wall of blockers and pop out past the Laker defense to rush for 33 yards and another Tiger score. It was then that the Tiger defense would key off of the offense and find their stride toward the end of the first quarter.
From there the rest is history as the Tigers would sack the Laker quarterback 4 times in the game with 3 of those coming in the first half from defensive end Xavier Owens.
Overall the Tiger rushing attack would light up the stat sheet and total 416 yards on just 30 carries. Leading the Tiger rushing attack would be Jaquan Bryant who would dart for 152 yards on just 7 carries and add 2 touchdowns on the night. Fullback Tommy Cherry would add 126 yards on 9 carries and add 2 scores of his own on the night. Overall 6 different Tigers would score on the night either offensively or defensively,
The Tiger defense would shut down the Laker offense most of the night with many possessions ending in a 3 and out sequence. While almost all of the Tiger defenders would rack up stats in the tackle column a few stood out above the rest. They were safety/quarterback Davonte Phelps would would haul in 3 interceptions on the night to bring his season total to 5. The always dominating Tim Roughton would cause havoc all night to the Laker rushers and record 8 tackles on the night with 4 of those coming for losses. Xavier Owens would light up the Laker quarterbacks all night and record 4 sacks on the night with 3 of those coming in the first half. He would also add 7 tackles to the Tiger total for the game. Marchez Phelps would add 7 tackles, 1 sack, and a fumble recovery to the effort to round out the top performers. Other Tiger defenders bringing the pain to Coach Wayne Rodgers defense would be Andrew McNair from his outside linebacker position and Terry Levels who would bring in the 4th Tiger interception of the night and return it for a late touchdown.
When Tigers Coach Wayne Rodgers was asked how he felt his team performed on the night. "Overall we brought the game together late. The first half our minds were just not in the game but I accredit that to all of the homecoming festivities going on this week and at half time. Once that was behind us we were able to go to work and get back on track. We have a lot of young guys playing for us and tonight the guys on defense did a great job. We just need to build on this win and keep moving in the right direction."
The Tigers will have a bye week next week and will then look to get back to work when they travel to the Hurricanes of Cape Hatteras on October 23rd. Game time is slated for 7:30pm.
