Creswell Riding High After 53 Point Romp Over Hatteras

Pictures and story courtesy:

After going undefeated last season in the Tideland Conference the Mighty Tigers of Creswell would kick off their 1st conference game of the season this past Friday night at home as they hosted the Cape Hatteras Hurricanes. In what would best be described as an offensive bombardment the Tigers would amass almost 500 yards of total offense on the night, with 357 yards of those yards coming by ground attack.

After a two week layoff due to an open date and a forfeit the Tigers would look to shake off the rust and come into the contest with a perfect 3-0 record. The Hurricanes on the other hand would come into the game looking to pick up their first win of the season as they entered the contest at 0-2. Cape Hatteras would come out strong in the first quarter and run a no huddle offense in an attempt to wear the Tigers down. By the end of the 1st quarter the Hurricanes would have the wind taken from their sails and be down graded to a Tropical Storm. The Tiger offense would go to work early and often as 3 different Tigers would find pay dirt in the first quarter. The potent running game of the Tigers would be firing on all cylinders and keep the visiting Hurricanes on their heels all game. The Tigers running game would be led on the night by offensive speedster Gary Blount. Blount would electrify the crowd numerous times on the night with a single game that could make a highlight reel for most high school players. Blount would score 3 times on the night in the form of a 75 yard kickoff return for a touch down, a 43 yard punt return for a touch down, and a 1st quarter running play where he would break around the right side of the Tiger line and bolt for 76 yards. But Blount would not be the only Tiger breaking up and down the field to keep the chain moving behind the hard working Tiger line. All Area performers Timelle Sawyer and Jaquan Bryant would add 147 yards of their own to the impressive Tiger total on just 12 carries. The duo would also add 3 TD's for the Tigers on the night. In all the Tigers would push the score to 33-0 by the half and to the delight of the Tiger faithful the final score would read an impressive 53-0. Tiger Coach Wayne Rodgers said of the win "we played well but there was still way too many mistakes tonight that hurt us. The down time over the last few weeks affected us tonight but we will get better this week and be ready to take on the rest of the conference schedule. We were able to get some guys in tonight for some valuable minutes that could pay dividends later in the season. Over all though I like where we are headed."

The Tiger offense was not the only star of the night. Numerous Tiger defenders would constantly be in the Hurricane back field all night causing havoc on opposing players and leave the Tigers with great field position all night. Leading the way for the Tiger defense was All Area performer Tim Roughton. Roughton would record a season high 12 tackles for the Tigers, force 1 fumble and be in on a quarter back sack. Other Tiger defenders who added to the shut out and kept the Hurricane coaches throwing their hats all night were: Marchez Phelps - 10 tackles, Tommy Cherry - 9 tackles, 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery and Shaton Basnight with 7 tackles, 1 fumble recovery and a TD. The Tigers will look to extend their undefeated streak in the Tideland Conference which now stretches all the way back to last season and stands at 10 games as they travel to Jamesville to take on the Bullets. Game time is 7:30pm.

Glad to see Creswell doing so well this current season and last. Last time Creswell did that good was when my dad and uncle played (around 82-83) from the stories i've been told. Keep up the good work guys.

If they had better coaches they would have been state champion many times over all the way back from the late 70's till now. They should have won at least 5 state championships from 1982 to now.Poor coaching staff is thier set back.We are strong here in Creswell but the coaching staff has never used good judgement.
