The Creswell Tigers and Southside Seahawks would battle down to the wire Friday night in a nail biter that would not be decided untill the final :17 seconds of the game. For the second week in a row the Tigers would take on a much larger opponent from Beaufort County and come away with a 28-22 victory.
The Seahawks would jump out early on the Tigers putting the home team in the hole 8-0. The Tiger fans would rally behind the home team though and with 2:40 left in the 1st quarter Timelle Sawyer would scamper 12 yards around the right side of the line for his first score of the night. The two point conversion would fail and the Tigers would trail 8-6 where the score would remain until the second quarter. Early in the second the Seahawks would put their option offense to work and scamper into the end zone to put the pressure back on the Tigers. With the Tigers trailing 14-6 Creswell quarterback Dovonte Phelps would connect with wide out Gary Blount on a 19 yard pass to the left corner of the end zone to bring the Tigers within two points of the visitors. The two point conversion would be good for the Tigers and the score would come to all square at 14-14 heading into the half.
Heading into the second half the fans would rise on their feet and both sides would return pumped up and ready for action. The Seahawks would take the opening kickoff of the half and begin deep in their own territory. On the second play of the 3rd quarter the Seahawks would fumble the ball directly into the hands of a waiting Tiger defender and Creswell defensive end Shaton Basnight would scamper into the end zone to put the home team back on top 22-14. After giving up two large running plays to the Seahawks the Tigers would force a Seahawk running back to fumble and take over on their own 48 yard line. Six plays later Justin Blount would scamper 23 yards reversing the field to put the Tigers well in command 28-14. But the Seahawks would not hang their heads and capitalize on a errant Tiger pass when the receiver Blount fell down in the wet grass. The Seahawk defensive back would return the interception 99 yards to bring the visitors back to within 6, 28-22. With 2:45 seconds left in the 4th the Tigers would roar down the field but be stopped on the 1yd line by the Seahawks. 8 plays later the visitors would be across the 50 yard line in Tigers territory and have 45 seconds to score. The Tiger defense would bear down and put the Seahwaks in a 3rd and long situation. With 17 seconds left the Tigers defensive back Justin Phelps would intercept the Seahawk pass and seal the win for the home team bringing the Tigers record to 2-0 on the young season.
The Tigers would rely on their mighty rushing attack once again to seal the win and rack up and impressive 266 yards on the ground of their 337 yards of total offense. The Tigers would be lead offensively by All-Area performer running back Timelle Sawyer. Sawyer would rack up 161 yards on 23 carries and add 1 score. The Tiger receiving corps would be led once more by speedy wide out Gary Blount who would haul in 3 catches for 71 yards and a score. Defensively the Tigers would be led by Sophomore Shaton Basnight who would have a spectacular night racking up 9 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 quarterback sacks and a touch down. Xavier Owens would add 9 tackles and 2 sacks on the night for the Tigers and linebacker Andrew McNair would add 7 solo tackles and 2 sacks. The Tigers will look to continue their winning ways in two weeks as they take on the Mattamuskeet Lakers on the road.
