Rocky Mount Tabs Schock To Take Over Football Program

ROCKY MOUNT - The Wing-T will continue to be the bread-and-butter offense of Rocky Mount football as evident by the selection of its new head coach.

In a press release sent out early Monday morning, Rocky Mount athletic director Michael Gainey announced that Richard "Dickie" Schock will take over the Gryphon program.

Schock, 43, has a huge connection with the man he replaces, B.W. Holt. Not only did he twice serve as an assistant under Holt, but he also played for him during his 19-year tenure as head coach at Starmount High School.

Holt resigned as head coach in May after six seasons at RMHS. Holt, running the Wing-T, posted an incredible 71-12 record in leading the Gryphons to six playoff berths, four conference championships and three Eastern final championship games.

"We are pleased to announce that the Rocky Mount High School football team will be under the direction of Richard "Dickie" Schock," said Gainey in the release. "Coach Schock is coming to us from Orange High School where he led the Panthers to their first winning record in 16 years and first conference championship in 24 years. He was a member of the Gryphon staff during the 2003-2004 season."

That one season Schock, an Appalachian State graduate, served as an assistant at RMHS was also Holt's first season as head coach. He was defensive coordinator and special teams coach of that squad before moving over to Franklinton High School as head coach for one season.

He then served as offensive coordinator at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School for two seasons, where the team its posted a school record for victories as well earning a share of a conference title - he first in school history.

He helped bring the same type success to Orange's program (2-A) in his two seasons there. Last season, He was the Mid-State 2-A Coach of the Year, Durham Herald Sun Area Coach of the Year and was a nominee for the N.C. Associated Press Coach of the Year.

Schock is the school's 11th head football coach since moving to its present location in the fall of 1953.
