Fayetteville Britt's Nixon Named State's Top Player

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Fayetteville Britt's Xavier Nixon has been named The Associated Press prep football player of the year for North Carolina.

Nixon earned seven of a possible 20 votes from statewide sports
writers in voting results released Friday. Greensboro Dudley
quarterback Ricky Lewis and West Rowan running back Kevin Parks both earned five votes to tie for second after leading their teams to state championships.

Nixon led Britt (14-2) to the Class 4-AA championship game and is the sixth-ranked recruit nationally by Scout.com. He is the first offensive lineman to be AP player of the year according to records dating back to 1983. Of the 27 previous players who have won or shared the award, 26 were either quarterbacks or running backs. The other was a wide receiver.
