Newton-Conover Beats Tarboro 51-28 For 2-A State Title

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Dorian Jones ran for 157 yards and two
touchdowns to help Newton-Conover beat Tarboro 51-28 in the Class
2-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship on
Friday night.

Jones earned MVP honors for the Red Devils (15-1), who closed the season with eight straight wins.

Newton-Conover won its first state championship in two tries. The Red Devils lost 14-13 to Southwest Onslow in 2000.

Josh Thompson added 106 rushing yards and a score for the Red Devils, who never trailed and broke open a 7-7 game with two touchdowns late in the second quarter to take a 21-7 halftime lead
over the Vikings (14-2). Jordon Hill and Joseph Bryant both returned third-quarter interceptions for scores for Newton-Conover, which scored 37 unanswered points.

The Red Devils finished the game with a 321-269 edge against the Vikings in total yardage.

    It was a great season that didn"t quite end like they wanted it to but congratulation to Coach Craddock and his team .You gave your team memories that will last a lifetime. For anyone who hasn't had the chance to meet Coach Craddock you are missing a real blessing. Jeff and Jenifer are great role models for young people in Tarboro even if they are Buckeyes.
