Pirate Men Fall Short To Blazers

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Cameron Moore scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Alabama-Birmingham over East Carolina 61-57 on Saturday.

The Blazers (13-14, 8-6 Conference USA) led by as many as 10 in the second half before East Carolina scored seven straight to make it a two point game, 59-57, with 2:08 left.

UAB turned it over twice in the final 2 minutes, but the Pirates missed four 3-pointers and turned it over just once themselves the rest of the way.

Preston Purifoy made both his free throws with 11 seconds to play, giving UAB its sixth win in its last seven.

The Blazers scored 22 of their 32 points in the paint in the second half.

Purifoy finished with 15 points, and the Blazers shot 50 percent in the second half (13 of 26).

Shamarr Bowden led the Pirates (12-15, 3-11) with 27 points.

The East Carolina men's basketball team dropped its fifth straight game Saturday in a 61-57 loss to UAB.

Shamarr Bowden had a game-high 27 points while Darrius Morrow and Robert Sampson each had 10 points.

ECU led 50-49 with 8:46 left in the game when the Blazers went on a 10-0 run to secure a UAB win.

UAB was paced by Cameron Moore's 21 points and game-high 14 rebounds.
