GREENVILLE, N.C. - Two East Carolina inside receivers, junior Danny Webster and redshirt freshman Quataye Smyre, have been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team policy according to an announcement from head football coach Ruffin McNeill Tuesday afternoon.
"While this situation is contrary to the progress we've made and certainly not indicative of the many right choices we make as a collective group, I'm disappointed any time we have to address issues like this," McNeill said. "We always talk about being accountable as a program and any behavior that contradicts that is unacceptable. Our priority is to put people in a position to succeed."
Webster, who also has experienced action on both the punt and kickoff return units, has started four of five games this season and is the Pirates' third-leading receiver with 18 catches for 144 yards. Smyre has played in the last two contests and has three receptions for 19 yards. McNeill said true freshman Isaiah Jones, who opened the campaign as an inside receiver before moving to an outside slot three weeks ago, would return to his original position.
East Carolina (4-1, 2-0) will travel to New Orleans Saturday to meet Tulane (4-2, 2-0) in a Conference USA contest at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET.
